Study Abroad

Since coming to Elon University I have been involved in the Study Abroad program in various capacities.

I have developed/co-developed three short term courses, for Elon’s January term. The first course was to Brazil, focusing on science and technology contributing to that country’s development. The second course (developed with Crista Arangala in the Math Department) was a service-learning class to Kerala, India, anchored by a traveling science center. In this class interactive science exhibits were made on campus and brought to India to share with schoolchildren in rural and urban schools. The third course (developed with Kristen Sullivan in Human Services Studies) is a practicum course in Public Health.

In Fall of 2010 I served as faculty in residence in the Elon London program. In addition to teaching a class in the program I helped to coordinate student activities, provided support and advice to local faculty, and addressed programmatic concerns.

I served on the Study Abroad Committee which approves and evaluates study abroad courses, and on the advisory committee for the Isabella Cannon International Center. As part of these activities I initiated the transition to on-line applications for study abroad programs, organized a discussion group for faculty interested in study abroad best practices and research, organized a student conference on campus to help students process and share their experiences and learning from abroad.
