Research
My research interests are in the areas of response to intervention, international special education, curriculum-based measurement, and effective practices for special educators.
Response to Intervention (RTI)
Response to intervention (RTI) is a new identification method for students with learning disabilities, but also a method for school improvement for students at-risk. The National Center on Response to Intervention provides a wealth of resources on the topic. In addition, Ed Shapiro, at Lehigh University, has a helpful video on RTI that will give you an introduction.
You might also want to check the new RTI Action Network for the latest information on the topic.
At present, several faculty and I here at Elon are working on a research project on RTI with the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS). We are investigating their implementation of the process through a case study methodology.
Curriculum-based measurement (CBM)
Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a type of progress monitoring that has been used in special education for more than twenty years. However, with more school systems using RTI, CBM is becoming very important for general educators to know. The National Center for Student Progress Monitoring offers a variety of resources to give you an overview. In addition, you might want to visit Intervention Central for resources especially suited for teachers in the classroom.
International Special Education
I am also interested in international special education, particularly in India.
