Project Requirements

(1) Written Responses & Quizzes (to short stories, criticism articles, films)
It is essential that you arrive in class each day with the reading completed and response forms filled out. Quizzes will be given periodically as well.

(2) Web Research Project & Presentation during final exam

Description:

Create a web research site on any topic(s) related to SF that interest you. You will have time every class period to work on this web site. If you change your topic during the term, keep your old research on your site and explain why you changed topics. You do not have to know how to make web pages, we will learn how to do this in class.

Website’s Minimum Requirements to receive a “C”:

  • Research topic(s) clearly stated
  • Consistent and meaningful navigation.
  • Visually appealing and easy to read (readable colors, meaningful use of images, spell-checked, etc.)
  • Includes at least 1 page that lists and describes external websites about your topic(s). It is insufficient simply to list links without a description. Minimum 12 sites.
  • Includes at least 1 page that keeps track of different definitions of SF that you come across throughout your reading and research. Copy the quotation and make sure to note where you found the definition (author, title, page). Label this clearly. Minimum 15 definitions.
  • Includes at least 1 page that keeps track of short stories, novels, films, games you’d like to read/see/play. As you read and research online, keep an eye out for interesting stories, novels, etc. Label this clearly. Minimum 15 entries.
  • Includes at least 1 page that keeps track of a SF timeline. As you read, keep track of major dates, historical movements, changes in SF.
  • Includes links to your own blog and your own collaboratively written piece of science fiction. Label these clearly.
  • Includes links to class homepage, peers’ blogs, peers’ web research projects. Label these clearly.
  • During the final exam period, you are required to give a presentation about your research website to the class.
  • During the final exam period, you will give each of your peers a written response to their web project.

(3) Blog, 14 entries total (one for each class period). To be completed at the end of each class period.

For the last 15 minutes of class, submit an entry to your blog. This is a space for you to reflect on what we’ve discussed, ideas you’d like to research or found interesting, things you learned. This is a casual kind of “journal” for you to reflect on ideas, and it is also a way for us to experiment with a new kind of writing.

Please start each entry with the label “CLASS 1”, etc. If you want to add more entries than are required, that is fine, just please label the required entries.

We will learn how to create blogs as a class.

(4) Collaboratively written science fiction story, posted online

More details about this will be given in class.

(5) Class Participation

Class will revolve around discussion and collaboration with your peers. Therefore you will be expected to actively participate in class discussion, groups discussions, group projects, etc.
