Homework Exercise - CIS 211 - Management Information Systems
Independent Work Policy
On this assignment, students must work independently. Actions such as directly collaborating with students currently enrolled in the class, referring to the work students formerly enrolled in the class, and using other people to complete the assignment are all examples of violations of this policy. Students should use the instructor for any questions about completing the assignment.
Academic Integrity
Students who choose to violate the independent work policy must cite the use of other people's work by including the names of those people in a conspicuous location. By providing citations, students avoid violating the Elon Honor Code. Students who both violate the independent work policy and fail to cite the names of contributors are subject to the Elon University Academic Integrity Policy.
Format
Students will use word processing software to complete the exercises provided below. Students choosing to use Microsoft Word should download hw-8.rtf and modify it. Students should use reasonable margins, fonts, font sizes, etc. in crafting their document. Default values are acceptable.
Students should convert their work to a PDF prior to submission. Microsoft Word on the campus machines has a Save As PDF option.
Directions
Complete each of the following exercises. Ensure to label responses with the corresponding question number. It is not necessary to repeat the question in the assignment, but students may choose to do so if that is their preference.
The number in parentheses next to each question indicates the point value for the exercise.
- (2) Locate the privacy policy listed on the Web site of a company
with which you recently made a purchase. On your answer sheet,
indicate the company name and the full URL (link) to the policy.
- (12) Assess whether the policy meets guideline #2 of Figure B7.5 on p. 389 in the Baltzan textbook. Specifically, for each of the six bulleted items in guideline #2, state whether the information is provided in the policy and where it is located.
- (4) Assess whether the policy meets guideline #3 of the same figure in the Baltzan textbook and if so, specify how the policy meets the guideline and what procedures in place to allow individuals to exercise choice and consent.
- (12) Elon University does not list a privacy policy on its home page nor on its list of policies. Present two arguments: one that argues that Elon University does not need a privacy policy and one that argues that Elon University must adopt an information privacy policy (you may find it helpful to refer to the description of privacy policies on p. 389 in the Baltzan textbook). Indicate the argument that you believe is stronger.
- The Elon University Acceptable Usage Policy is provided in
the list
of policies online. For each of the following actions, make
an argument that the action is not allowed by referring to at
least one passage in the policy.
- (2) Give your OnTrack password to your parents or guardian so they can view your grades online
- (2) Run an on-line business from your dorm room computer
- (2) Post a picture to your Facebook account from a lab computer
- (2) Forward an email with funny pictures to your friends from your Elon email account
- The Elon University Email Policy is provided in
the list
of policies online.
- (4) List the titles and names of the individuals allowed to direct system administrators to inspect email messages of system users. For example, one title and name is "President: Leo Lambert"
- (4) List the procedures in place to inform users when system administrators have inspected their email messages.
- (12) Refer to the Elon University Web Policy on the list of policies. List three different ways that my Web pages violate the policy along with the specific policy guideline. For each violation, indicate what sanction I am possibly facing by violating the guideline.
Grading
Point values for individual exercises are provided in the above section. Generally, exercise responses will be graded on a 0-1-2 scale in which a score of 2 indicates a perfect response or response with only a minor flaw and a score of 1 indicates an incomplete response, response with multiple minor flaws, or response with a major flaw. Scores will then be multiplied to reach the appropriate point value for the exercise.
Students should provide answers that use complete sentences, accurate spelling, and appropriate grammar. Answers that lack these properties but are otherwise correct still run the risk of being marked as a score of 1.
