Homework Exercise - CIS 211 - Management Information Systems
Independent Work Policy
On this assignment, students must work independently. Actions such as directly collaborating with students currently enrolled in the class, referring to the work students formerly enrolled in the class, and using other people to complete the assignment are all examples of violations of this policy. Students should use the instructor for any questions about completing the assignment.
Academic Integrity
Students who choose to violate the independent work policy must cite the use of other people's work by including the names of those people in a conspicuous location. By providing citations, students avoid violating the Elon Honor Code. Students who both violate the independent work policy and fail to cite the names of contributors are subject to the Elon University Academic Integrity Policy.
Format
Students will modify a Microsoft Access database subject to the directions below.
Directions
First, save the following two blank database files to your U drive, USB stick, or personal computer. Please do not change the name of the files. When you open the files you will see that there are no tables and no data.
Second, complete the modified versions of following exercises found in the Tech Plug-ins section of the textbook (refer to the CIS 211 blackboard home page for directions on gaining access to the Tech Plug-ins). Numbers in parentheses indicate point values for the exercise.
- (40) Problem 1 (WasteNot Recycling): use the directions in the
exercise according to the following details.
- Do not create a database. Instead, open and use the WN database file listed above (this file will initially contain no tables and no data).
- (32) Tables, fields, data types, and primary keys
- (4) Create two tables with the names WN-Customer and WN-Pickups
- (6) Create the appropriate fields in each table
- (6) Ensure that each field has the appropriate data type
- (6) Ensure that each text field has an appropriate field size
- (6) Ensure that each field is required
- (4) Ensure that each table has an appropriate primary key
- (4) Create one appropriate one-to-many relationship between the two tables and ensure that referential integrity is enforced in the relationship
- (4) Populate the database with the given data
- (20) Problem 4 (On-Campus Health): read the description but
ignore the steps 1 through 4. Instead, use the following steps.
- (10) Separately import each worksheet in the cis-211-hw-4.xlsx file into a table in the OCH database file listed above. Use the name of the worksheet as the name of the table. During the import process, select the primary key from an existing field.
- (10) Create the appropriate one-to-many relationships among the tables (hint: each table has at least one link to some other table and some tables link to multiple other tables). For each relationship, ensure to enforce referential integrity.
Delivery
Use the following steps to upload your two Access files to Blackboard no later than the date listed on the class schedule. We will discuss the solution to the assignment in class on the due date, so late work cannot be accepted.
- Ensure that you have not changed the file name
- Open the Blackboard page for the class
- Click Course Tools
- Click Digital Dropbox
- Click Send File (not Add File)
- In the Name field, type HW4-WN or HW4-OHC (do not type your name)
- Submit the file
- Don't forget to submit both the WasteNot and the OnCampus Health databases
