Normandy,

Landing

Normandy was the sight of the D-Day invasion, and the subject of one of  the required books for the course, D-Day: June 6, 1944, by Stephen Ambrose.  We will stay three nights in Bayeux (Hotel Novotel Bayeux), and will tour several sights, including the Omaha and Utah beaches, St. Mere Eglise, and Point du Hoc.  You may also want to see the Bayeux Tapestry, which is housed not far from our hotel.  In Bayeux there are also several museums (including the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, which we will visit), a cemetery for British soldiers killed in the invasion, and a beautiful cathedral.  Otherwise, the city is quite nice just to walk around.

Here is a map of the Omaha Beach area, which we will visit. We will be at the American Cemetery, which is located around the "WN62" label on the map. We'll visit the ruins of the WN 62 strongpoint, too. Then we'll drive down to the beach at the area labelled "Les Moulins" and along the beach road to the exit D1.

Links to the Normandy area:

  • Normandy is the Encyclopedia of Britannica website, with very extensive information on the D-Day invasion, including maps, videos, photos and first-hand accounts from both sides.

  • The French Tourist Board for Normandy site includes lots of information on the area, including sections on the D-Day sites

  • Bayeux Tapestry includes images of the complete tapestry as well as closeups of some sections.

  • Hotel: Ibis Bayeux. This is the official page for the hotel where we'll be staying. (You'll have to use the "Find a hotel" link to get to the one in Bayeux)
